In order to compete in the Big 4 bank marketplace, our client – a well-known Australian financial institution – chose to undergo a large scale organisational digital transformation. The Bank decided to use Apigee as the key technology enabler for their digital strategy and engaged with ASG to design and implement a fit-for-purpose payment gateway solution, and migrate with minimal disruption, its 43 billion customers.

The banking industry has changed dramatically in the past few years with the mass adoption of new digital technologies disrupting what was once a stable marketplace.

Mobile apps, cashless systems, and many other advances have changed the stakes, forcing banking institutions to step up or step aside.

Our client – with an aggressive growth strategy – was looking to upgrade from its existing payments provider.

As it stood, our client was losing revenue due to its provider being unable to accept payments via direct debit, and its systems were too tightly integrated with the payments provider which was presenting other challenges.

As part of our client’s growth strategy to provide data services that could be easily consumed by a range of mobile and web applications, they wanted to migrate the functionality of their existing payments gateway to the Apigee platform, together with over 43 billing customers.

At the time, ASG were already working with the Bank to help them implement a complex payments processing engine, which was responsible for orchestrating between existing bank microservices and linked to a large web application that’s used by property managers, real estate agents and the public.

Given ASG’s experience working with this technology and the existing Agile delivery methodology, our client engaged us again to design a fit-for-purpose payment gateway solution on the Apigee platform that would meet the banks complex business requirements.

After presenting the integration and sequence diagrams and showcasing the solution and data mappings that created successful communication between new and existing legacy systems, ASG moved into implementation.

The solution design, implementation and testing was completed on time and within the forecasted budget, and the Bank switched from their existing backend, to their new payments processing engine API hosted in Apigee, with minimal disruption.

    Key Outcomes:

    • Successful migration of existing payment gateway into Apigee platform.
    • Solution design, implementation and testing completed on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption.
    • Successful transfer of over existing customers to new platform.
